Home-Made Dog Cookies

October 21st, 2011

I found this recipe on Tip Junkie and had to share. We can not forget our furry kids on Christmas morning. Make them some dog cookies!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (you can use another type of flour if your dog is sensitive to wheat)
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter, chunky or smooth (I used smooth this time)
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water

Additional flour for rolling

Instructions:

    1. Preheat oven to 350° F
    2. Mix dry ingredients together.

    1. Mix in the peanut butter and hot water. You may need to add more water if the dough is too sticky.

    1. Knead the dough well.
    2. Roll out the dough into 1/4″ thickness and cut into shapes with dog cookie cutters.

Note - This recipe doesn’t call for it, but I put an egg wash (one egg whisked with a fork and then brushed on with a pastry brush) on the treats before I baked them. It gives them a nice sheen once they’re baked. Here’s how they look before baking.

  1. Bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet for 40 minutes. Turn off the oven and let them cool overnight.

If you and your dog can’t wait that long, cool them completely on a wire rack before serving.

Instead of cutting out more shapes with the left over peanut butter and oatmeal dough, I rolled it into balls. Then I made a cross hatch fork mark on the dog cookies. This is the same way you would do for human peanut butter cookies.

After: The cookies get very hard, just the way dogs like them!

Storing: This peanut butter dog biscuit recipe makes biscuits that will last in a sealed air tight container at room temperature for one week. You can store them in the refrigerator for 3 weeks and in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Point Reward System for chores

October 20th, 2011

I am serious when I say that I believe in NOT giving out allowance for everyday household chores. As a mom, I don’t get paid in money for washing the floor or folding laundry… why should my kids earn money for keeping their rooms clean or brushing their teeth? These are every day items that are required to run a household (I know that I will have those who disagree with me, however I want to show your something else that we have implemented with out clan before you scold and cuss me out for being a bad mom!!)

Having one child who doesn’t understand the concept of money anyway and thinks that you can go to the store and ALWAYS buy him a toy while we are there, we have made out own store at home with items that I have picked up on sale racks, dollar sections of Target, Walgreens sale aisle, etc. We call it Mommy’s Treasure Box Store.

Here’s the Breakdown for our family

Point Reward System for chores and extras

(I found everything that I used on sale or at yard sales – DO NOT overspend on these items… I budget this very closely and take $20 cash out and can only use that $$$.)

I started by making POINTS – I used the pre-made sheets of business cards and ran them through my printer with 1 Point, 2 Points, 5 points and 10 points on them. I then took with the kids and stamped on each card.

I keep these in my desk. As children complete normal chores, I give out these points. If I have to ask more than once for something, then, they don’t earn anything. We don’t ever take away points… If my kiddlings do something extra, without asking, they will earn extra points. And we give them for good behavior (especially with my Autistic son, Berlyn.)

At the end of the week, our family store opens up. I spend less than $20 every paycheck on items for the store. The kids get 30 minutes to shop and purchase items with their points. I purchase little things at the dollar store, Target Dollar section, sale rack at Walgreens, etc and also print up (on the same business cards) rewards that they can buy as well.

Everything in the point basket is priced at 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 points… and then there is a movie theater card that is 500 points.  Included in the basket are school supplies (decorative pencils, notepads, stickers) toys, games, candy, dolls, bubbles, color books, cooler TEEN stuff for Shelby, etc.

I store everything in a basket that I picked up at a yardsale for $1! I store it up out of reach of kiddlings. If they have 50 points and spend 35, then they have 15 that carry over to the next week. They store their points in an envelope on their chore clipboard in the hallway. Here is the link to the Chore Clipboards that we made: http://scrapwarrior.com/blog/2010/07/03/chore-charts-on-our-wall/

My kids LIKE to help out around the house. They make it a point to remind me when they do extra things just so that they can earn points.

September 21st, 2011

I LOVE going to football games for the local kids. I remember watching my husband play while we were in high school and it was one of my my most fond memories. I have had the honor to be invited to take photos of Glassford Hill Middle School’s 2011 Varsity team and I am having a BALL taking photos of these up and coming tweens and teens!

All of the team photos will be online for sale at my website: http://www.krismazy.com

Has it really been THIS long?

September 20th, 2011

WOW! A lot has happened since July of this year…. Yes, I know that it is September!!!  I ended up being award additional financial aid to go back to school for by bachelors. Liberty University took and transferred 79 of my 81 credits so I started my B.S. in Education with an emphasis in Art!  I am so excited to be doing this.

Lar and I began foster/adoption classes at the end of July and a have only 2 more classes to go!!! YEAH!! We are not certain what we are going to do as of yet. But, both know that we are missing someone in our family. So I can see adoption in our future (maybe not for 5 years, but we both see it! Our main goal right now is to finish these classes (I have a TON of paperwork to do this week for Thursday!)

We transferred out of pack 617 in Chino for Griffen and Larry in cub scouts and found an EXTREMELY Successful Pack in Prescott. We are still helping with popcorn and with Webelos, only there is NO DRAMA! Go figure! I thought that it was just natural… but it isn’t! It’s like hitting the EASY BUTTON now!

Our garden has about expired. We have gotten a TON of crops and am in the process of canning, freezing and drying EVERYTHING (Plus another 350 pounds of fruit that I bought – Cherries are in my NEW Excalibur 3900 Dehydrator as I type.)

We did make a family choice and put Berlyn in public school for this school year and he is getting a lot of help with his Special Needs teachers.  Seems to be doing well, that is until he comes home and EXPLODES everything that he bottled up during the day.

My photography business is keeping me busy, but I am extremely thankful for everything that God has put in front of me!

How does your garden grow?

July 6th, 2011

We have had monsoon weather the last few days with a ton of rain and cooler weather… My garden is SPROUTING!

We planted garlic, onions (green, red and yellow) zucchini, round zucchini, butternut squash, radishes, carrots, peas, string beans,  tomatoes, bell peppers, and jalapenos.  I can’t wait to really start eating out of the garden!

We also have a full herb garden with mint, rosemary, cilantro, parsley, pineapple sage, thyme, lemon thyme, oregano, basil, chives and more.
